IBM Datapower - A SOA Appliance

Writing a post on this blog after an eternity....

I thought to share a few technologies that I had been working on which might just broaden the circle of knowledge of someone, one of which is IBM Datapower a SOA Appliance.

A SOA Appliance or an XML appliance is a special purpose network device used to secure, manage and mediate XML traffic. They are most popularly implemented in Service Oriented Architectures to control XML based Web Services traffic, and increasingly in cloud oriented computing to help enterprises integrate on premise applications with off premise cloud hosted applications. XML Appliances are also commonly referred to as SOA Appliances, SOA Gateways, XML Gateways, Cloud Brokers. Some have also been deployed for more specific applications like Message-oriented middleware. While the originators of the product category deployed exclusively as hardware, today most XML Appliances are also available as software gateways and virtual appliances for environments like VMWare.

Essentially it is more like a hardware middleware. The most popular amongst these are IBM Websphere SOA Appliances. I have had the privilege of working on Datapower XI 50 appliance.
Many organizations are researching, considering and even implementing service-oriented architectures (SOAs) within or across their IT environments.

Usage of SOA appliances

High speed transformation and processing of XML traffic
Security and Governance of Service Oriented Architectures or SOA
Control of Web application API's that are commonly today exposed as XML based REST interfaces
integration of enterprise applications to services hosted in the cloud
    Data routing and transformation
    Filtering

Common features of XML appliances    They can parse, validate, transform and route XML messages via XPath and XSLT
They can control access to applications that expose data and functionality through XML APIs
They can control SLAs for how XML based services get shared with other applications
They can track XML traffic and usage of specific application services exposes through XML interfaces

You can download as well a Competitive Review of all SOA Appliances which is a white paper.

Career Benefits

Skilled resources on IBM Datapower are in demand nowadays. However the certification cost is very high which can go as high as somewhere between 3000-4000 USD. So budding practitioners are advised to learn this hands-on and then go for certification.
